Abstract

Introduction: In recent years, Mindfulness and its principles have achieved credibility and attracted the interest among health and education professionals, especially due to its biopsychosocial benefits. More than a meditation technique, Mindfulness is currently seen as a tool that enables and empowers citizens to promote and educate for health, namely regarding the increase of health literacy and health decision-making.

Objectives: Increase knowledge about the above mentioned concepts, simplifying, clarifying and making them useful, clarifying the framework of these practices in the Portuguese health context, and contributing to raise awareness about the importance of collaboration between specialties.

Methodology: 46 sources were consulted and cited, including scientific articles, thesis, reports, books and ebooks, in a total of 68 different authors and 5 national and international reference institutions

Conclusion: The current social and scientific context is favourable for the introduction of Mindfulness in the different sectors of Portuguese society, and that this fact may be determinant for improving the health and well-being of the population and the quality of life in general.
