About the Journal
FOCUS AND SCOPE
REM – Revista de Estudos do Mar is a biannual international journal whose main objective is the publication and dissemination of technical-scientific articles relevant to Maritime and Aquatic Science among the community of Portuguese-speaking countries. The journal is a platform for academics, industry professionals, regulators and policymakers to share and discuss the interface between the aquatic environment and humans, thus contributing to improving ocean health and increasing marine biodiversity. In this way, it is intended to disseminate current knowledge and put into perspective the way in which human activities impact marine health, promoting opportunities to minimize the risk of public and environmental health.
Although the REM is open to all contributions related to Maritime and Aquatic Science, the main areas of interest are:
- Marine biology and biodiversity;
- Architecture, design, history and naval archeology;
- Monitoring, modeling and evaluation of the impact of persistent pollutants on marine life, their association with human exposure and public health, with particular emphasis on the most vulnerable population groups (children, elderly and occupational groups);
- Impact of emerging pollutants on the aquatic environment and potential risks to human health;
- Identification of the main sources of pollutants, their bioavailability and biotransformation in the aquatic environment;
- Biomonitoring and toxicological effects on marine health;
- Monitoring of innovative aquaculture systems, with emphasis on more sustainable production methods and with greater protection of the aquatic environment;
- Treatment and elimination of waste and marine water contaminants;
- Prevention of marine pollution of all kinds, especially from land-based activities;
- Methodologies that allow minimizing and addressing the impacts of ocean acidification;
- Consequences of global warming and climate change in the aquatic environment and potential effects on human health;
- New marine resources and their valorization;
- Sustainable solutions that promote the protection of marine and coastal ecosystems.
The journal will not consider submitting documents that focus only on monitoring routine analyzes of the aquatic environment.

PEER EVALUATION PROCESS
Evaluation process
The purpose of the evaluation is to help authors improve the quality of their work by providing constructive and timely evaluations prepared by experienced academics. REM considers the evaluation process as a fundamental step for the improvement of articles. For this reason, REM evaluators are encouraged to present, in addition to their opinion on the publication, suggestions for improvement regarding the content and form of the text.
The evaluation process of articles submitted to the REM consists of two stages. The first, a preliminary evaluation by the Editor and Associate Editors, examines the suitability of the work to the editorial line of the journal and makes the preliminary evaluation (Desk Review). The second, the evaluation itself, consists of a system of blind evaluation by peers (double blind review), to be carried out by two ad hoc consultants.
The article is accepted if the peer review indicates acceptance or acceptance with restrictions. The editorial team (editors-in-chief and/or associates, if applicable) may intervene and make the decision of acceptance in cases of a tie after consulting with a third reviewer. If both initial reviewers reject the article, the editors will confirm the rejection decision. If both initial reviewers accept the article, the editors will confirm the acceptance decision.
The evaluation primarily considers the scientific quality of the text, focusing on the following aspects:
- Relevance of the topic;
- Originality of the work;
- Relevance and theoretical consistency of the text for the development of the area of knowledge;
- Quality of the theoretical framework used;
- Quality of writing and organization of the text;
- Contribution of work to administrative knowledge and/or administrative action in organizations;
- Methodology used: ownership, quality, level of sophistication;
- Quality of data analysis and discussion (if applicable);
- Conclusions: achievement, foundation and coherence.
The result of the evaluation will be sent to the first author of the work, by email. A total period of ninety days is estimated, from the date of acceptance in the preliminary evaluation (Desk Review) until the first opinion on the article; Once approved, the article undergoes a spelling and grammar review before being published at REM.
